Women in Computing

The denial of women’s contributions to computer science is only now coming to light. In the 90's, computing was considered a boy’s hobby and early women in computing were depicted as switch flippers, not intelligent beings doing intelligent tasks. The idea of women having any input and their ideas being of value is still a pretty recent development. Now there is a drive to add women to software companies but not nearly as great of one to drive women into software engineering in the first place. If women and their perspectives are to be fully realized in the computer world there must not only be a societal shift to encourage all females, no matter their age, into scientific pursuits, but also a path of mediocrity for them, as currently exists for males. Equality cannot be realized while one side is expected to be excellent while the other is allowed to be mediocre.
